A NEW LABORATORY FOCUS: THE USC HEALTH EQUITY LABORATORY
Health equity means that everyone has a fair opportunity to live a long, healthy life. It implies that health should not be compromised or disadvantaged because of an individual or population group’s race, ethnicity, gender, income, sexual orientation, neighborhood or other social condition. Achieving health equity requires creating fair opportunities for health and eliminating gaps in health outcomes between different social groups.
As an associate professor in the USC Department of Psychology, Clinical-Community Program, I have re-focused my research activities over time. In moving away from basic laboratory research toward combined community participatory research (CBPR) and psychophysiology, I have redefined the USC Biobehavioral Health Laboratory as “The USC Health Equity Laboratory”. The new lab located in Barnwell College, Room 341.
The new vision for my lab addresses the urgent need to facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration by forming faculty collaborations across USC departments and HBCUs. It is the goal of this laboratory to promote health equity, prevention, and resilience among medically underserved populations.
Promoting culturally-relevant research pertaining to the prevention and control of cardiovascular disease and cancer is essential to bridging ethnic health disparities gaps and promoting social justice. We conduct biopsychosocial research focusing on racial and socioeconomic disparities among several underserved demographic groups, including African Americans.
